Frida Kahlo’s painting “The Dream (The Bed)” (El Sueño, La Cama), created in 1940, stands among Kahlo’s most iconic meditations on her personal life and her own mortality, within the broader Mexican philosophies of life and celebration of death.

Last month’s (November 20, 2025) sale of this painting for $54.7 million at Sotheby’s New York established a new global auction benchmark for both female and Latin American artists, and highlights a staggering appreciation in the painting’s worth, having last traded publicly in 1980 for merely $51,000. This thousand-fold increase underscores the dramatic recalibration of the art canon, signaling the value of intense surrealism of Kahlo’s personal narrative, on par with the 20th century’s most celebrated European modernists.
This poem captures the profound paradox of Kahlo’s life from the perspective offered by her painting: imprisoned by chronic illness in her bed, she experienced life’s embrace only in her dreams, while consciousness brought her face-to-face with imminent death.

This intimate masterwork heads to auction at Sotheby’s on November 8 with a $40-60 million estimate, and I offer this ekphrastic poem.

The poem narrates what Kahlo depicted: the bed as a sanctuary, where dreams allowed her broken body to dissolve into longing, while waking returned her to pain and mortality’s patient courtship:

In my sleep, embraced
Life sprawls its yearning
adorned with a canopy of longing
I surrender to dreaming
 
On my bed, restless
death and suicide waiting
wilted bouquet in hand
my inevitable waking
 
In my body, imprisoned
Dreams of life emerging,
Awaken in slumber
Suitors of death and defeat
Await in waking

این شعر را چند هفته قبل از فروش تابلو در تفسیر این نقاشی و تناقض عمیق جاری در زندگی او نوشته‌ام. کآلو که بیشتر عمرش را در بستر بیماری مزمن (پولیو در دوران کودکی و شکستگی‌های ناشی از تصادف با اتوبوس در جوانی) زندانی بود، آغوش زندگی را تنها در رؤیاهایش تجربه می‌کرد، در حالی که در هوشیاری، هر بار و هر روز رو‌در‌رو و چشم در چشم مرگ می‌نشست.

در خواب من،
آغوش بازِ زندگی،
چون درختی از رویا می‌روید
و من در شاخ و برگ‌هایی از آرزو
فرو می‌روم.

در بستر من،
مرگ و انتحار، بیقرار
با گل دسته‌ای فرسوده
در انتظار بیداری من است

و ابرها شاهدان این دوگانه تلخ و ناگزیر منند:
زندگی و جوانه‌های عشق،
که در خواب می‌رویند
و خواستگاری از مرگ و ناکامی،
که برای هوشیاری من انتظار می‌کشد.
